About Dr Cavan

Dr Cavan specialises in the prevention, management and reversal of type 2 diabetes and the intensive management of type 1 diabetes, including insulin pump therapy and hybrid closed loop systems.  He has also written several books for people with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and prediabetes.  

As an endocrinologist with a focus on metabolic health, he believes in providing person-centred care, working collaboratively with his patients to find the best approach for managing their condition after reviewing all options together. He has an emphasis on the role of lifestyle change as well as medications in helping people manage their diabetes.

His knowledge and experience in this field spans over 25 years as a Consultant Endocrinologist at the Bournemouth and Poole Diabetes Centres, which are now part of University Hospitals Dorset. Additionally, he has gained international recognition through his role as Director of Policy and Programmes from 2013 to 2016 at the International Diabetes Federation, a global federation representing over 240 national diabetes associations. More recently, he has overseen diabetes projects in a number of other countries, which has broadened his knowledge and expertise.

To support patients and healthcare professionals in managing diabetes, he has contributed to the development of several education programmes for people with diabetes as well as training courses for healthcare professionals.  His most recent book, ‘How to reverse type 2 diabetes and prediabetes’ was published in January 2024.
