Dr Wakelin is a consultant dermatologist and honorary senior lecturer at St Mary’s Hospital, London. She leads the skin allergy service for Imperial College Healthcare Trust and has a broad interest in the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory diseases.
Dr Sarah Wakelin qualified in medicine in King’s College London in 1988. She completed her dermatological training as a senior registrar in the department of Cutaneous Allergy at St John’s Institute of Dermatology prior to being appointed as a consultant dermatologist at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare Trust.
She completed her higher specialist dermatology training in 1998, and was appointed as a consultant at St Mary’s Hospital in 1999. The last two years of her training were spent in the cutaneous allergy clinic, St John’s Institute of Dermatology, where she carried out research on latex allergy and lanolin allergy. She now runs the cutaneous allergy clinic for Imperial College Healthcare Trust. Her teaching and non-clinical duties within the NHS include training post-graduate doctors and medical students, and appraising consultant colleagues.
In private practice, she sees older children and adults of all ages with a wide range of skin complaints including rashes, moles and skin lesions, and carries out minor skin surgery. She also prepares medicolegal reports, acts as an expert witness, and undertakes advisory work for cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies.
Her special interest is in allergic skin diseases, and she’s a committee member of the British Contact Dermatitis Society. At her NHS base, St Mary’s Hospital, she runs a dedicated clinic for the investigation and treatment of skin allergies. Dr Wakelin has written many original articles and is the author of ‘Your Guide to Eczema,’ ‘A Handbook of Systemic Drug Treatment in Dermatology’ and the co-author of the newly revised ‘Colour Handbook of Dermatology.’
She is an honorary senior lecturer at Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine, where she runs the cutaneous allergy service. She has a special interest in exzema, acne and inflammatory skin disease.
Dr Wakelin is interested in general dermatology – but in particular, inflammatory and allergic skin diseases, and acne.
