Severe and prolonged stress can have implications for some health problems. Many doctors believe this is because stress can directly influence body functions, but it can also influence health indirectly via the lifestyle choices that we make under stress.

It may not always be possible to change what stresses us, but it is possible to learn to become more aware of the triggers and to modify our reactions to them.

Managing stress does not mean eliminating it. It starts with taking stock of what is going on and, with support, finding the courage to come right up close to our physical and mental experiences and to be with them without judgement. In doing so we can begin to respond more skilfully to some of those challenging situations.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction [MBSR]

Mindfulness means paying attention, on purpose, and non-judgmentally, to whatever that arises – agreeable or disagreeable – in the present moment, in body, mind, and the world around us. Why mindfulness?

The human mind can perhaps be described as a sea of thoughts, images and emotions. Many of us lose a large proportion of our waking hours lost in these mental events, focusing on the past that’s already gone, or the future that’s not yet here and not often predictable or controllable. In cultivating a capacity to fully engage with the here and now, to be fully present with one thing at a time, you learn to become more centred and steadfast, and from there to:

• Become less stuck in the past
• Become less anxious about the future
• Relate differently to difficulties
• Enjoy life more

Mindful awareness training has undergone scientific evaluation for some years. It has been shown to help people face up to their physical and psychological struggles. Most participants report lasting benefits including more energy and enthusiasm, more able to relax, more able to approach stressful situations.
