Problems with weight control?

Difficulty in controlling weight can lead to a variety of health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, an increased risk of developing certain cancers, heartburn and arthritis. The bottom line is that as far as your health is concerned being overweight is not good for you.

The clinic receives many referrals for the treatment of overweight or obese patients. We take a holistic approach using clinical psychology, tailored nutritional education, health status monitoring and medication to help patients make the lifestyle adjustments that are inevitably needed for long term success. We acknowledge the value of discipline, regular attendance, body fat composition measurements and increased physical activity in achieving success and all these are important elements of SmartWeightTM, London Medical's weight management programme.

Our Senior Clinical Nutritionist works together with the consultants on each patient's individual progress:

  • Treatment of obesity
  • Diet & physical activity
  • Behavioural techniques
  • Medication
  • Bariatric surgery

Low Glycaemic Index (GI) eating:

  • Low GI diets have received much media attention of late and have been regarded by some as the latest 'fad diet'. On the contrary, low GI eating is actually based on sound nutritional principles and is a useful tool for facilitation of weight loss and for those with diabetes.
  • Low GI eating forms the basis of the clinic's SmartWeightTM meal plan and is successful in helping patients on the programme to lose weight in a way which encourages healthy eating habits in the longer term.

Low GI refers to carbohydrate-containing foods which are broken down and absorbed slowly, giving the most minimal impact on blood glucose levels. This helps those trying to lose weight as it helps prevent hunger in between meals and therefore reducing the need to snack. It is also useful for blood glucose management for those with diabetes as it helps stabilise blood glucose and insulin levels preventing ‘peaks' and ‘dips' which lead to poor control and at worst, hyper- and hypoglycaemia.

Groups versus individual dietary counselling:

The SmartWeightTM programme offers both small group and private individual consultations - family group consultations are also available.  The one you select depends on your preference as an individual.  Some people prefer a one-on-one consultation for advice tailored to their particular lifestyle whilst others prefer the dynamic of a group where they benefit from the camaraderie, support and the discussions and sharing of ideas.

Medical Therapy

In the UK there are two drugs licensed to help in weight reduction, Orlistat (which stops fat taken in the diet being absorbed) and Sibutramine (which works as an appetite suppressant). Both produce modest weight loss but are currently only license for up to 2 years. Patients regain their former weight quickly when the medication is stopped.
