Investigations and Treatments at London Medical

Our ophthalmic services ensure patients recieve a 'complete care' approach. The following are a range of the most common investigations and treatments offered at London Medical.

Intravitreous injections for ARMD

Intravitreous therapy with drugs directed against vascular endothelial growth factor (anti VEGF) drugs is done in a dedicated suite and has the potential to improve vision.

YAG Laser Therapy

YAG is an abbreviation for neodymium yttrium-aluminium garnet and is used for treating secondary cataract or scar tissue and non-invasive iridotomy for narrow angle glaucoma. This highly advanced laser, with excellent optical characteristics, has the abillity to open capsules with minimal lens pitting. This procedure can be performed at the time of consultation.

Retinal Laser

Is a special laser that treats ophthalmic conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular oedema, glaucoma and retinal ischaemia. Laser treatments can be performed at the same time of diagnosis for same-day treatment.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Is an established treatment where a photosensitive dye and a laser light selectively target exudative age-related macular degeneration to stabilise and sometimes improve vision.  London Medical is well staffed for urgent PDT treatments and can be performed after fluoroscein angiography and an OCT test to allow same day treatment.

Computerised Assessment of Visual Fields

The Humphrey Field Analyser II is the recognised standard of care for early diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases resulting in visual field loss, as well as being the DVLA's legal driving assessment tool. The latest 745i model is a computerised perimiter with SITA and gaze tracking to increase accuracy in the examination of patients visual fields.

Biometry and Autofraction

IOL Master Biometry is a non-contact high precision instrument which revolutionises all previous techniques. It sets new standards for the measurement of the ocular axis, bettering patients' vision and quality of life through the improvement of the intraocular lens implantation.

Corneal Topography

The OPD scan from Nidek combines corneal topography with refractive power and wave front analysis, autorefraction and keratometry. Multiple simultaneous functions avoid instrument alignment problems; this machine is the industry's leader, with 1,440 measuring data points in only 0.4 seconds.

Digital Fundus Photography

London Medical uses the newest Nikon non-mydriatic retinal camera with 6 million pixels combined with a state of the art electronic imaging system. Our unique sophisticated diabetic retinal screening programme has been specifically developed using this 5-field fundus approach with reporting by accredited consultant ophthalmic surgeon retinal screeners and enables images to be emailed for immediate review.

Fluoroscein Angiography

A procedure performed here by our experienced medical photographers for over 10 years. This successful and efficient service offers high quality 6 million pixel images with advanced digital imaging system for rapid acquisition, storage and retrieval of fluoroscein runs. Images can be sent as hard copy photographs, via email or by disk for same-day consultant reporting.

OCT Retinal Scanning

The cutting edge Zeiss Stratus is an optical coherence tomography instrument that provides unrivalled images of the retina and optic disc with results presented in relation to normative data that are essential in diagnosis. It is essential for diagnostic accuracy of retinal disease. OCT images can be acquired either as cross sectional OCT images of the retina and/or as a parallel sectional stack at variable depths of the fundus.

DISCAM

DISCAM is a stereo digital imaging system for recording the optic nerve head (disc) in clinical and research applications. Left and right stereo images are captured and viewed simultaneously for 3D visualisation. This is a very useful test for detecting and monitoring subtle structural changes in the optic nerve head which typically occur with glaucoma.
