Dr Malcolm Prentice

BSc MB BS FRCP
Dr. Prentice is a consultant physician in general medicine, endocrinology and diabetes at Mayday University Hospital, and Honorary Consultant at St. George’s Hospital, South London.  He trained at King’s College Hospital and has a BSc in Pharmacology from King’s College, London.
Dr. Prentice has a special interest in thyroid disease, thyroid nodules, goitre and radioactive iodine therapy for which he has an ARSAC licence, and was one of the first people in the UK to set up a one-stop thyroid nodule clinic with ultrasound in 1990.  He is the co-author of Guidelines for the use of Thyroid Ultrasound by Non-Radiologists and runs the national training course for thyroid ultrasound jointly with the Royal College of Radiologists.  Dr. Prentice is on the UK working party for the UK Guidelines on Management of Differentiated Thyroid Cancer in Adults, and former Secretary of the British Thyroid Association.  He is also a member of the Society for Endocrinology, European Thyroid Association and Diabetes UK.



Dr David Peterson

MA, MB.BChir, MD, FRCP, RNutr.   Dr David Peterson is a Consultant Diabetologist at London Medical.  He also works at The Royal London Hospital as a Consultant in General Medicine, Diabetes & Metabolism.  He graduated from Cambridge University in 1975 and trained in Diabetes and Endocrinology in London and at Oxford University, where he completed his MD in nutritional aspects of diabetes, lipids and cardiovascular disease.  His current interests in diabetes relate to nutrition, pregnancy, and cardiovascular risk.



Dr Nigel Oakley

MB, BChir, MRCS, MRCS, LRCP, MD, FRCP, MRCP - Consultant Physician
Dr. Oakley was educated at Rugby School and King’s College Cambridge (major scholar).  With a 1st class degree in biochemistry he entered University College Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1958. After posts at UCH and Hammersmith Hospital he was awarded a Nuffield Fellowship to the University of Pittsburgh. In 1970 he became deputy director of the Metabolic Unit at St. Mary’s, as Senior Lecturer and Hon. Consultant Physician. In 1978 he was appointed Consultant Physician to St. George’s Hospital, where was head of Diabetes and Endocrinology until his retirement from the NHS in 1999. Dr. Oakley’s research interests have included diabetic retinopathy, the subject of his Cambridge MD, diabetic pregnancy, and the application of IT to diabetic clinic management. He has published many papers on aspects of clinical diabetes and has undertaken invitation lecture tours to Australia and India. He has been in private practice since 1978.



Dr Catherine Lunken

Dr Catherine Lunken  MA BM BCh FRCP  specialises in seeing patients with diabetes and lipid disorders at University College London Hospitals. After qualifying at the Middlesex Hospital and Oxford University, she trained extensively in general medicine and cardiology at University College Hospital, The National Heart Hospital and the London Hospital before concentrating on diabetes. She is currently the Clinical Lead for Familial Hypercholesterolaemia. (FH)  at the Hospital and also for the medical students attached to the Diabetes and Endocrinology department. She has an interest in the training of future specialists and sits on the relevant committees at the Royal College of Physicians and the British Medical Association. Her research interests centre around abnormal liver function in patients with insulin resistance, premature coronary artery disease and screening for FH. She is a member of The Association of British Clinical Diabetologists and of Diabetes UK.



Dr David Levy

MA, MBBS, MD, FRCP - Consultant Physician
Dr. Levy is a consultant physician in general medicine, diabetes and endocrinology at Whipps Cross Hospital. He has an MD from the University of London (1993) on work done on small fibre neuropathy in diabetes mellitus and has published over 25 papers. He has also written a book for the hospital based doctor on "Practical Diabetes" in 1999. He is a member of Diabetes UK, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and the American Diabetes Association.



Dr Tony Isaacs

MA, BM BCh, MSc, FRCP, DFPHM - Consultant Endocrinologist
Dr. Isaacs is a Consultant Endocrinologist Emeritus. He has had broad interests in endocrinology including the investigation and treatment of thyroid disease, reproductive and weight disorders, osteoporosis and the menopause.
Dr. Isaacs has published a number of original research papers and has been awarded research grants from the King’s Fund PACE (Promoting Action on Clinical Effectiveness) and from the NHS R&D Health Technology Assessment Programme. He is Associate Professor at the School of Health of Middlesex University, a member of the Society for Endocrinology, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and Honorary Secretary of its Endocrinology and Diabetes Section.



Dr Martha Ford-Adams

Consultant Paediatrician, Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and lead consultant for children and young people with diabetes (appointed Nov 2004).  Previously at Princess Royal University Hospital (appointed May 2001).  Special interest in diabetes, particularly hypoglycaemia.  Prior to appointment as a consultant research fellow for Prof David Dunger at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, her main research interest was nocturnal hypoglycaemia in children and she carried out a randomised trial looking at the role of insulin lispro, the new rapid acting analogue in reducing this problem.  Other research interests include cerebral oedema and DKA, engagement of young people with diabetes, and the genesis and prevention of complications



Dr David Cavan

Dr David Cavan DM FRCP has been a Consultant Physician at the Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrine Centre since 1996.  He has extensive experience in the treatment of diabetes, with particular interest in the management of type 1 diabetes with multiple daily injections and with pump therapy.  He believes that the cornerstone of diabetes treatment is patient education to facilitate active self-management.  To this end, he has been actively involved in the development of patient education programmes for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, including the successful BERTIE programme, whose format has been adopted by over 40 diabetes centres around the UK.  He has co-written an internet-based education programme for type 1 diabetes which is accessible free of charge (www.bdec-e-learning.com).  At national level, he has been Chair of the Education and Psychosocial Care Section of Diabetes UK and has participated in a number of working groups on patient education.  He is national spokesman for the Diabetes Education Network (www.diabetes-education.net), which supports diabetes teams across the UK in delivering high quality structured education programmes.  Dr Cavan also sees patients with diabetes-related problems, including hypertension, kidney disease and erectile dysfunction, as well as patients with pituitary disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome and testosterone deficiency.



Dr Stephanie Baldeweg

Dr Stephanie Baldeweg is a Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at University College London Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medicine at UCL.  She graduated from Humboldt University, Berlin in 1990 and undertook her Specialist Training in London. She was awarded the MD for the thesis on “Insulin resistance and endothelial function in health and type 2 diabetes”. Dr Baldeweg is interested in all aspects of diabetes and endocrinology. These include thyroid, reproductive and pituitary disorders as well as osteoporosis, weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction. She also has an interest in pregnancy preparation for women with diabetes and endocrine disease. Dr Baldeweg is the Training Program Director for the North Thames Rotation in Diabetes and Endocrinology. She regularly lectures at national and international meetings as well as Patient days for Support groups such as Diabetes UK and the Pituitary Foundation. She was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in March 2009 (FRCPI) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in June 2009 (FRCP).



Dr Ralph Abraham

Dr. Ralph Abraham is the Clinical Director of London Medical, which he founded as The London Diabetes & Lipid Centre in 1991.  Starting his career as a biochemist at Oxford, he did a PhD in Biochemistry at Imperial College on insulin resistance in obese mice, a subject that is all too relevant in the management of diabetes today.  He was trained at the Hammersmith Hospital and Kings College Hospital in gastroenterology and hepatology before specialising in Endocrinology and Diabetes at St Mary's Hospital and St Bartholomew's Hospital, leaving the NHS in 1986.  Dr. Abraham works in full time private practice with a successful and recognised expertise in diabetes, endocrinology, lipid disorders and obesity management.  He also runs the SmartWeight programme for obesity.



Laila King

Laila is a Diabetes Specialist Nurse as well as an Educator.  She studied European languages and Linguistics before entering into Nursing as a postgraduate.  Laila's youngest daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of four and now successfully manages her condition with an insulin pump. Passionate to enable everyone with diabetes to get in control with their condition, she has acquired advanced clinical expertise and practical understanding about life with diabetes and transferred this into publications, such as: 'Insulin Injection Technique' (2003), 'Delayed Wound Healing in Diabetes' (2001), and 'Diabetes in South Asians Explained' (Tahseen A Chowdhury & Laila T King, Altman Publishers, 2006).  Laila's comprehensive self care compendium ‘My Life – My Diabetes 2009’ contains information on every aspect a person with diabetes or their family might want to know.  Laila has been instrumental in developing and delivering diabetes self-management education to patients and their families as well as healthcare professionals in the NHS.  She has now been for two years at London Medical, in addition to working for the Warwick University Medical School.  Training in the use of diabetes technology – pumps and continuous glucose monitors – has become one of the most beneficial tools that she wants to be on offer to all insulin using patients.  Laila has a motto: 'A reed cannot change its position in the field but it can learn to bend with the elements'   This, she believes, fully applies to the person who develops diabetes - as yet incurable, however, manageable with empowering education and ongoing support



Mimi Tran - Clinical Podiatrist

Mimi joined the London Medical diabetes team in June 2008. She graduated from La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia in 2002 in Podiatry and worked in community health for 4 years before coming to London. She is experienced in all aspects of podiatry and is keen to work together with people with diabetes to prevent complications. Her main interest is in health promotion and self management and she aims to achieve quality patient outcomes by working in a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals. She is registered with the HPC and is a member of the Wound Care Society.



Professor David Galton

Professor Galton is a consultant physician and Emeritus Professor at St. Bartholomew’s and London Hospital Medical College. He was also physician-in-charge of medical ophthalmology at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital. He has doctorates in medicine (M.D.) and science (D.Sc.) from London University. He has been chairman of Clinical Science, chairman of HEART UK., chairman of Clinical Lipids of the Royal Society of Medicine, chairman of the Lipoprotein Section of the Association for the Study of Diabetes and Grants Committee Member of Diabetes UK. He is a Fellow of two Royal Colleges (Physicians, London; and Ophthalmology, London). He has published more than 250 peer reviewed research papers and his recent books include: Hyperlipidaemia in Practice; Lipids and Cardiovascular Disease; Diabetes Mellitus: Aetiology and Metabolic Aspects and Dyslipidaemia.



Sam Walmsley BSc(Hons) Consultant Orthotist

Sam Walmsley is a Director and Consultant Orthotist at the London Orthotic Consultancy, a leading private orthotic clinic. His specialist interests include; Diabetes, Complex Foot & Ankle orthotics, Paediatric Orthotics, Lower Limb Orthotics and Proprioception Posture Therapy. He trained at the University of Salford and has previously he worked at the North Hampshire NHS Trsut and Queen Mary’s Hospital, London. He is a member of the British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists and is Registered with the Health professions council (HPC). He has lectured widely on orthotics and biomechanics to GP and Orthopaedic Registrars.
