Dr Raj Mookerjee

Hepatologist BSc (Hons) PhD MRCP

Dr Raj Mookerjee is a HEFCe funded Senior Lecturer at UCL and Clinical Lead for Hepatology at UCLH. He provides both inpatient and outpatient general hepatology services at UCLH, including non-invasive assessment of fibrosis with transient elastography and full transvenous haemodynamic assessment of patients with portal hypertension and transjugular liver biopsy. His academic interest is in the role of inflammation in precipitating liver decompensation in cirrhosis, with specific reference to vascular dysfunction. His studies on patients with alcoholic liver disease have highlighted the importance of inflammation in precipitating deterioration in liver function and portal hypertension, particularly relevant to the two common conditions, alcoholic and non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis. His group’s on-going investigations have led to a systematic evaluation of factors that link inflammation with vascular dysfunction and a specific focus on dimethylarginines as potential biomarkers to indicate those at risk of progression of liver disease and for targeting intervention. This fits into a general translational theme of activity within the Liver Failure Group at UCL and a focus to explore pathophysiological mechanisms that explain observations made in patients in order to improve the diagnostic and therapeutic tools that are then applied to clinical care. Dr Mookerjee also has an active interest in medical education and is the Lead for medical specialties teaching of undergraduates at the University College London medical school (Bloomsbury campus).
