Insulin Pump & CGM Education for Optimal Insulin Use in Diabetes
Understanding Insulin Pump Therapy & Continuous Glucose Monitoring
This is a 2-day hands-on training course in starting insulin pump therapy (CSII) and optimising control through CGM. It is intended as a joint learning event for people with diabetes, their family members and Health Care Professionals. The course has been accredited by RCP, RCN and endorsed by DBA.
Day 1 - Starting Insulin Pump Treatment
Introduction to pump therapy, benefits & challenges
Basic education & competences necessary before pump therapy
Suitability of an individual for pump therapy - choice or selection? Who would really benefit?
Knowledge of available pumps and their distinguishing features - Personal preferences
Demonstration of Animas 2020 (Animas), Paradigm Veo (Medtronic), Accu-Chek Combo (Roche) & Dana R pump (Advanced Therapeutics UK)
Daily pump management - filling reservoirs, priming the pump, programming basal rates and standard meal boluses, age-related basal insulin requirements
Selecting a cannula & infusion set: mastering good insertion technique
Day 2 - Follow up after Pump Start & Continous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)
Using the advanced pump features: Temporary Basal Rates, Alternative Basal Pattern, Bolus Options
Fine tuning Basal Rates, Insulin to Carb Ratios & Correction Factors; suspending and disconnecting the pump
Tube free Patch Pumps- Another alternative: Demonstration of my life OmniPod (Ypsomed)
Exercise, illness and puberty challenges with an insulin pump
Preventing hyperglycaemia & DKA on pump therapy: Pump Therapy Protocol
