High Fatty Acid & Fish Intake May Reduce Risk of AMD

May 25th, 2007

Results from a study reported in May's Archives for Opthalmology showed that a high fatty acid and fish intake may reduce the risk of Age-related Macular Degeneration.   4519 people took part in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, in which the results support similar findings in earlier studies.  A high intake of fish in particular reduced the risk of neovascular AMD by up to 39%, whilst omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids were also beneficial.  Foods rich in Omega 3 include eggs, walnuts, kiwi and acai berries - though dietary supplement pills are also widely available.

In contrast, the study also showed that AMD risk appeared to increase by as much as 54% when intake of arachidonic acid was high.  Arachidonic acid is an essential fatty acid, and comes from dietary animal sources such as meat or dairy products.
