High glycaemic load bad for plasma lipids

May 1st, 2007

A study in a large number of adults, recently published in the European Heart Journal last month showed that glycaemic load content and carbohydrates were consistently associated with all lipids. So glycaemic load (the glycaemic index of a food adjusted for the amount of that food) and carbohydrates have been found to be associated positively with total and LDL cholesterol (the bad type) and inversely with the protective good HDL cholesterol. This reinforces our practice in the SmartWeight programme run at London Medical (020 7467 5470) that low GI and low glycaemic loads are important recommendations in people who have low HDL cholesterol and raised triglyceride (markers of insulin resistance).
