90% of British population at risk of hypertension

September 10th, 2007

Medical journal The Lancet reported this week that up to 90% of the country is at risk of suffering from high blood pressure (hypertension). Our modern lifestyles, including obesity, a salt-rich diet, lack of exercise, alcohol and smoking are blamed for the worrying statistic, and if the situation continues, the number of sufferers is expected to exceed one billion over the next 20 years. The article notes that the condition is now so widespread that even children and teenagers are being diagnosed with it.

Britain is not the only nation at such risk. Countries with recent rapid economic development including China and India have also noted an alarming rise in hypertension risk.

Hypertension is one of the first, and most easily measurable indicators that the body is at an increased risk of heart disease, strokes and kidney failure. Despite the fact that drugs are affordable and easily accessible, many patients stop their medication when they notice an improvement, in the belief that the problem has been ‘cured’.

London Medical’s Heart Protection Plan was specially developed for those who want to know more about their risk of heart disease or stroke. The Heart Protection Plan is tailored to the individual and offers a more thorough and detailed assessment of risk of heart disease than any routine medical examination.
