DASH diet associated with less risk of death from various causes

May 2nd, 2008

This study, reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine (April 14, 2008), looked at 88.5 thousand middle aged nurses taking part in the Nurses’ Health Study over 24 years. The results concluded that healthy women adhering to a ‘DASH’ (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) style diet, high in wholegrains, fruit & vegetables, nuts, legumes and low fat dairy products, had a lower risk of death from coronary heart disease, stroke or heart attack.

A higher DASH score was also significantly associated with lower levels of CRP (C-Reactive Protein) and IL (interleukin)-6, both of which are markers of inflammation, and also lower intakes of sodium, sweetened beverages and red or processed meats.
