Acomplia use suspended by European drug watchdog

October 24th, 2008

The European drugs watchdog has just recommended that doctors do not prescribe the anti-obesity drug rimonabant, also known as Acomplia.

There has been concern about the mood effects of rimonabant (Acomplia) and certainly the percentage of patients unable to continue with the drug because of these side-effects is higher than first thought.  But it is the concern about serious psychiatric problems, and even suicide, that has led to this recommendation.

However, not all patients seem to be susceptible to this risk and there are many patients currently taking the drug without a problem and with considerable benefit.  Our advice is to discuss the need for the continuing use of rimonabant with your consultant or GP the next time you have an appointment or attend for a prescription renewal.  There is no need to immediately stop taking the medication.
