On Saturday 26th July, London Medical opened its doors to its patients and members of the general public for its first Diabetes Open Day. 

Exhibitors included the latest in Continuous Glucose Monitoring - the Abbott Freestyle Navigator, Deltec Cozmo and Animas insulin pumps, the 'virtually painfree' electronic lancing device from Germany - Pelikan Sun, Lifescan's OneTouch Easy and Ultra Smart PLUS, Bayer's blood glucose meters - the Acsensia Contour and New Breeze 2 and Arctic Medical's Hypo-fit products and the Uric Acid Monitoring System. Diabetes UK were on hand to offer more information about their ongoing charity work and how they can help and Medipal introduced their credit-card sized medical ID card.

 

  

 

Consultant Orthotist, Sam Walmsley, provided visitors with an opportunity to assess for any pressure areas on the soles of their feet, using the Parotec In-shoe plantar pressure measurement system, and offered advice on how to prevent and reduce these areas.  

 

  

 

A series of informative presentations took place throughout the day including Dr Abraham's insight into the new drugs available to treat diabetes and Personal Trainer, David O'Connor's, inspiring talk on the benefits of exercise. Dr Stephanie Baldeweg entertained participants with the myths and historical facts surrounding diabetes and Consultant Orthotist, Sam Walmsley emphasized the importance of foot care and the role of orthotics in diabetes.

Overall the day proved to be an educative and interesting insight into the new technology available for diabetes treatment and care as well as an unusual opportunity for people with diabetes to meet and share experiences with eachother.
