More information on link with Lantus glargine and cancer
July 1st, 2009
Lantus glargine is a long acting insulin that has been widely used since 2000. A recent German study of about 127,000 patients in an insurance database has unearthed a statistically significant association of use of Lantus insulin and cancer greater than that with other types of human insulin but not comparing a similar long acting analogue insulin, detemir (Levemir). A Swedish database suggested an increased risk of breast cancer with Lantus use not confirmed statistically in a Scottish study. A UK study has not shown any association between cancer and Lantus use.
There are a number of potential reasons for these findings and much more information is required to confirm them. Patients should NOT stop taking their Lantus glargine but discuss their options with their physician at their next appointment.
